Some key mistakes you want to avoid in midsummer gardening

July 16, 2012

After all the work you put into your garden, midsummer is no time to slack off. This is close to harvest time and there are just too many mistakes awaiting you, which threaten to turn your garden from wow to ho-hum The first mistake many gardeners make is to prune their trees on months that don't have an “R” in their name. That's right, pruning in May, June, July, and August weakens your trees and might stress them out-leaving them vulnerable to disease and stress. Don't cut your law too short.

Many gardeners don't leave enough growth for their lawns to recover. Also, longer grass needs less water. Don't over water your grass. Most lawns, it turns out, only need about three to five minutes of watering. Of course, you have to adjust this if you're in a state that is experiencing a drought or heat wave. Don't underwater your trees. Even if you have a well-established tree, make sure it gets one hour of soaking every week. Use a trickle soaker. Water them more if there's a heat wave. Don't ignore your vegetables. Inspect “easy to grow” plants at least once a week for insects.
