Keep your garden looking good all summer long
July 12, 2012 Keep these basic gardening practices in mind to not only keep your garden looking great throughout the summer but also ensure your plants will keep coming back season after season for years.
If you have tulip beds, don't water them. Tulips bloom based on a mix of conditions including temperature and soil moisture levels. Unfortunately, gardeners often mix other plants with their tulips and end up over watering tulips when watering those other plants. As a result of too much soil moisture, the tulips don't bloom. The key is to let the beds your tulips are planted to rest. No need to water them. They will be back next spring.
If you plant phlox, make sure they have a lot of space. Keep their roots well-watered. These plants get fungal diseases fairly quickly. That is why it is important to make sure they get a lot of air circulation and well-drained moisture at their roots. Drain well but water deep down so the roots fill out well.
Avoid using sprinklers around your clematis plants. Clematis don't like too much moisture. Unfortunately, many gardeners tend to over water this plant. The key is to give it the chance to dry out its roots between each watering.
