Six colourful creative container arrangements

May 24, 2012

Dramatically boost the impact of your blooms this year by using eye-catching and colorful container arrangements.

Plastic pots are quite affordable and lightweight. For this type of container, try the following plants Purple wandering jew (Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’), Rhodochiton vine (Rhodochiton atrosanguineus) and Bluebird nemesia (Nemesia ‘Hubbird’)

Gold and orange combos. The great combination of gold and orange is brilliantly accented by corkscrew hazel. The latter can be permanently planted in your garden. To put this together, you need: ‘Red Majestic’ corkscrew hazel (Corylus avellana ‘Red Majestic’), ‘All Gold’ Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra ‘All Gold’), ‘Isla Gold’ common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare ‘Isla Gold’) and Deep orange fama pansy (Viola ×wittrockiana [Fama Series] Deep Orange)

Trailing and upright rosemary have a great effect when using a pink-themed planter. Use the silver leaves of sage, rosemary, and mandenvilla vines for a nice effect. For this design, you'll need ‘Berggarten’ sage (Salvia officinalis ‘Berggarten’), Trailing rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis Prostratus Group), ‘Red Riding Hood’ and mandevilla (Mandevilla sanderi ‘Red Riding Hood’)

Use clay containers to train plans for a single stem look and pruning. You get the flowers and foliage to appear at the pinnacle. The best candidates for this look are: Purple wandering jew (Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’), Silverlace plectranthus (Plectranthus oertendahlii silver-leaved), and Double lavender superbells (Calibrachoa ‘US08CJ1601’)

If you want to plant in groups, try to get a contrast of Ace of Spades sweet potato vine against the rich red of Encanto Orange begonias.

Another great arrangement is to use containers to complement and echo each other through an entranceway. The colors work with each other while the plants' textures and shapes provide variety. You can use the following plants: Pink Strip, Gold-leaved Algerian ivy, standard fuchsia, Ti Tree, tuberous begonia, and foxtail fern.
